Zane and I (Danaya) had a special moment today. We were at the school in Tierra Linda during snack break, asking the teachers for a class list, and talking with the students. Dorcas, who is the youngest daughter of Santa and Santo, came right up to me and asked if I would bring Zane to her house for a while. (At least I think that is what she said!) We wove the back paths through the cement brick houses to her place, which is a series of cement block buildings around a central courtyard. A number of extended family members live there as well. We spent the next hour in one of her sister's bedrooms, talking, coloring, playing, and watching fuzzy TV. I also had a wonderful conversation with her sister Juana, who is 17 and sells vegetables in the market. Juana only has a grade 4 education, because her parents both had some health issues, and needed her to help with their vegetable stall more. She would love to learn more. She can read, but some things still confuse her. I would love to collect a number of simple Spanish readers for her which gradually increase in difficulty, so that she can practice and learn in the evenings in her home. Does anyone have anything like that?
