Learning We Desire

"Tell us, if there were one thing we could do for your village, what would it be?"

"With all respect, Sahib, you have little to teach us in strength and toughness.  And we don't envy you your restless spirits. Perhaps we are happier than you? But we would like our children to go to school. Of all the things you have, learning is the one we most desire for our children."

Conversation between Sir Edmund Hillary and Urkien Sherpa, from Schoolhouse in the Clouds,
as quoted in "Three Cups of Tea" by Mortenson and Relin

Perhaps things in the Himalayas aren't so very different than in Guatemala.

Ok, this has nothing to do with this post, but are you guys not going to go to Tikal at all during your time in Guate?

We've sure thought about it, but it's pretty hard with Zane, and expensive. Maybe we'll fit it in at the last minute...

Iximche ruins would be a great place to take Zane. You can catch it on your way back to Guatemala City. Tikal is in the Malaria zone - a location we have avoided due to the medication required. Have you guys tried the canopy tour/zipline in the Atitlan Nature Reserve? Zane is to little for the tour, but you might enjoy it. It's certainly not for the faint of heart!

AH! I've been away for 3 weeks and I'm just catching up on your blog now starting from the most recent and going backwards and while I was away I read "Three Cups of Tea" and the whole time I was reading your blog I was just thinking... Wow, this sounds SO similar to that book, but Dave, Danaya & Zane are people I actually know. So crazy! Thanks for sharing your journey with me. Bon retour a Canada bientot. :)
