Drug Cartels in Guatemala

The news is often very bleak here, as few people in the media give any hope for the country of Guatemala (you can read one here). There are many foreigners who see it as hopeless. We met a man in a bookstore yesterday, and after we told him what we were doing, he told us that it's not even worth trying to help the Guatemalan people.

We think that if we're going to go down, we may as well go with those who are trying to make a difference, rather than with those who opined and criticized. We're going to befriend and support the locals (like Abel and Candelaria) who are making their communities better. And we're sure going to enjoy more life along the way. Today, for example, we "really lived".

Just finished watching the movie, "Amazing Grace". Don't give up living and supporting those locals because it truly is possible to make a difference with every contact you make. Again, I am reminded of how you are truly living during your time in Guatemala, heeding the call to greatness, daresay holiness.

It is absolutely worth it. What you guys are doing is going to make a difference - and if it opens doors for even one child - it will be worth it. A piece of my heart is in Tierra Linda and always will be. (my husband and I fostered a little boy from Tierra Linda last summer in the states while he had cleft lip surgery. He is back in Tierra Linda with his family) It is a beautiful community, with lovely people.

Thanks for all that you are doing - for the computer - for the library (as a librarian, this excites me to no end) - and for loving these amazing people.

Thanks for the encouragement. We want to remember that these people (like all of us) are always at a crossroads. If they realize that we believe in them, are coming alongside, and that there are many people around the world that really care, couldn't that encourage them to imagine a better future?

Kim, if you can send a photo of your friend from TL, we can find him and see how he's doing. Thanks for caring.

Dave - thanks so much! Actually, I was just there at the end of March and went up to Tierra Linda to visit his family. They live just up the hill (slightly) from the community center. I just keep watching what you guys are doing, and just know that it will make a difference in little Alex's life.
