Manrique (the 6th grade teacher) spent some time today talking with us about how excited (emocionada) he is about having books. There are literally no books in the school--no textbooks, no novels, no dictionaries, no encyclopedias. He was SO SO SO excited to have a few teaching resources to use. He was almost jumping up and down! We asked him if he would like a class set of any books, and his face lit up. He would be happy with a class set of almost anything, and put a couple requests in.
It was interesting to discuss with him how inadequate he feels because his teaching consists of lecturing and having the kids copy from the board. We can easily criticize this as bad teaching methods, but without textbooks, posters, or other resources there are no other options. There is no way we can fathom how the schools here do without resources.
