Today is Maundy Thursday, or "Holy Thursday", part of the Easter Week celebrations. While this isn't a big deal in Canada, it's the first day when things are really shut down around here. Apparently some people try to visit seven churches today, as part of following the steps of Christ or the "stations of the cross".
While Catholic families are pretty involved in the processions, Protestant and non-religious families don't seem to take things quite as seriously. Many Guatemalans traditionally go to the beach during Semana Santa (Holy Week). Tamales and chilies rellenos are common with Catholic families, but apparently many other families will have a massive basket of bread as a tradition (and snack on it all weekend).

I sure hope you are going to be in Antigua this weekend. People travel all over the world for that...
