Cofradias (Brotherhoods)

Cofradias are a centuries-old brotherhood-guild concept, imported from Spain. They function with a foot in both the church and traditional Mayan beliefs, and service in a cofradia is a way that people achieve community leadership. They usually have a patron "saint" that they look after. This cofradia looks after the statue of Maximon, the local god of all vices. Cofradias have often been the most powerful leaders in towns. You can read more about it here.
