Easter Dinner

We had a very yummy selection of leftovers for Easter Dinner tonight.
It has been interesting to learn the Guatemalan traditions for Easter. All traditions are based on Catholic background, including the name Semana Santa (Holy Week). No one here has ever heard the name "Easter". The Protestants here don't have anything special for traditions, just a big family meal.

They have many yummy traditional Guatemalan foods that they make and eat together here (such as the chiles rellenos that Rosa made us last Wednesday). The only food traditions that overlap with Canadian/American/European Easter are having a big meal with family, and special Easter bread. Interestingly, fish is the traditional meat for the Easter meal here.
The other big tradition to do over Easter weekend here (for the nonreligious and not so poor people) is go to the beach, probably because kids get the week off school.

fish is the traditional easter meat because Catholics generally don't eat meat around Easter, especially on good Friday.

Easter is "Pascua" and you probably won't hear that word often as it is more commonly used closer to Guatemala City...due to the American influence around this time of the year. And, fish is usually eaten...although we had ordered pizza and decorated eggs. (Thanks to an egg decorating kit that a friend of ours sent us.)
