Juan and Betty are the owners of the property, and our new friends. They own the Jerasa ferreteria (hardware store) in Solola. Juan grew up in a small pueblo only a few minutes' walk from his property, and has built his business from scratch.
Juan was reading Yancey's Soul Survivor. He was at the part about Martin Luther King, and was saying regretfully how the ladino/Mayan relationship is similar to the white/black relationship in the southern states. His awareness of (and sense of responsibility for) reality is incredible.
