We Love Stanley

We're not sure how the Stanley Tool company has achieved Guatemalan market dominance, but in the obscure-tools-and-gadgets department, they are the clear leader.

You might remember these screen door springs from an old cabin in your youth. While you've moved on to pneumatic closers or a retractable screen door, this is still new technology here. The other hardware stores had no idea what we were talking about.

What does a "door" conjure up in your mind? "Door" for Guatemalans is usually an iron door without a window, installed for fortress-like security. Having a screen door, let alone leaving it free-swinging, is just not known.

A little spring can say so much about the freedom from violence that we take for granted back home.
