Since Danaya, Dustin, Jaydene, and I have all now been swimming in Lake Atitlan, we thought it safe to share a news flash with you, courtesy of our friend Shelley:
At the recent 5th World Water Forum in March, Lake Atitlan was awarded "Threatened Lake of the Year". This is probably because since 2005, when Hurricane Stan destroyed Panajachel's sewage treatment plant, the town just flushes its sewage directly into the lake. On a busy tourist day, that's about 40,000 flushes. Algae now covers 75% of the lake as a result, and the local LIFE school held a water forum to educate townspeople about not bathing in the lake.
We think the strange fungus that we have developed is unrelated.

but maybe it is related, because ever since Dustin and I have been home we have been sick too. Major digestive issues!
